Well it’s only January 21st, 2016, so I’m really not that behind! Twenty sixteen. New year. New me. First blog/website? Challenge accepted!
I’m pretty pumped for what’s to come this year… although if I’m going to be honest I’ve been feeling positive since, let’s say, mid December? Not just because my best friend got married and it was amazing (YAY NATALIE AND KEVIN!), but I’ve realized that there are a couple things that I want in my life- and what’s stopping me? Here they are:
First of all, just like everyone else, I want to travel more. I grew up traveling to a decent amount of places (the result of a Dutch-Indonesian Dad and a culturally-curious Mom) but in my adult years have spent a lot of time driving to Northern Michigan and plane hopping to weddings across the US. Before I go on, it’s necessary to say that I think Northern Michigan is one of the most gorgeous places in the states, and weddings are my all time favorite celebrations. However… fortunately for me, in 2015 I not only went to the wonderful city (that everyone is currently obsessed with) of San Francisco, California – but I spent time in Italy in August and Spain in November. Being abroad, experiencing the culture (pasta! wine! pinxtos!), and embarrassing myself by only speaking English made me realize how huge the world is and how badly I want to see it. Thus my decision to become a world traveler.
Second, there are so many things that I love to spend my time doing. As a pediatric pharmacist I make an impact, which is wonderful and rewarding, but I definitely feel there is something missing. As a child I was very creative and always made things, put on shows, wrote a lot.. but in middle school slash high school I opted for a more ‘social’ role. The past ten years I have found myself picking up more interests, whether it be knitting, calligraphy, playing tennis, watching all of the Oscar nominations for Best Film (everyone should do this!), or of course traveling. I want to be able to spend more time doing the things I love and challenging myself in a more creative way than my everyday job. In starting a blog and growing a small calligraphy business I hope to do just that.
On this site I hope to share the beauty of my everyday life in Chicago as I explore one of the best cities (while attempting not to take it for granted). Of course I will also include my travels near (see you in May, Austin, Texas!) and far (Ireland and UK, I’m ready for you!). In this year I’ve decided to take advice from my own journal and live like a tourist at home and a local abroad.
